#ACLUcon18: You belong here

Since the 2016 election, the ACLU has reaffirmed its place as the nation’s foremost protector of our civil rights. In the first six months of the Trump era, membership quadrupled to 1.6 million and $83 million in donations came pouring in. In light of this massive growth, and the perilous state of civil rights under the new administration, the ACLU organized its first conference in almost a decade. The goals of the event were to energize members and transmit that no matter who you are, where you come from, or what you believe, you are welcome at the ACLU and in this country.

Hyperakt’s challenge was to capture the spirit of this socially-minded, inclusive gathering through the event’s branding.

Our Approach

We centered our approach on a simple and direct phrase: You Belong Here. You belong in this conversation, you belong at this event, and most importantly in these times, you belong in this country.

As defenders of civil rights, regardless of what issue matters most to each of us, we all have values we share. To convey this intersectionality through the brand we layered belief statements revolving around five hot-button issues– racial justice, immigration, reproductive rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.

The conference, held June 10-12, 2018 in Washington, D.C., was a resounding success. Over 2,300 participants from various backgrounds and locations came together to affirm the values we hold dear, celebrate the work we have already done and prepare for the fights that lay ahead.
